The Pandanus Mat

For all activities related to Pandanus

The Sama, and many other groups in the southern Philippines, are skilled in fibre crafts, including the use of Pandanus. See:

M. B.-G. Jundam (1983) Sama. Asian Center Ethnic Research. Field Report (Series II) No. 2, University of the Philippines Press: Diliman, Quezon City, pp. 49.

On p. 19, a photo shows Sama people dining while sitting on a fine handwoven mat (probably made from Fimbristylis, a grass) with a circular food cover called tutup, made from dried pandan leaves. These covers may be common, as they also appear in a later photograph (p. 45) showing people sitting with food during a mourning vigil.
